The Parsha begins with the many mitzvos that apply only to Kohanim. The Gemara in Yevamos 5a says שאני כהנים הואיל וריבה בהן הכתוב מצות יתירות that Kohanim are unique in the sense that they have many more Mitzvos that only apply to them.

One could ask why is it that the Kohanim specifically are the people who have more Mitzvos than other Jews. Kohanim are typically on a higher level of Kedusha than other Jews being that they serve in the Beis Hamikdash. One would think that they should require less mitzvos because of the great level of Kedusha they reach as opposed to other Jews who aren’t on such levels, they should be the ones to have more Mitzvos. So why is it specifically the Kohanim have so many extra mitzvos that only apply to them?

Perhaps the answer could be that it’s specifically because they are on a higher level that they require extra Mitzvos as a שמירה. The Gemara in Sukkah 52a כל הגדול מחבירו יצרו גדול הימנו- the greater a person is, the greater his Yetzer Hara is.

To illustrate out this point, the Mishna in Avos 5:5 says The Tosfos Yom Tov writes the following:

We see that it’s at the exact moment that a person is in a moment of greatness where the Yetzer Hara tries extra hard to make a person stumble.

One of the unique Mitzvos by a Kohen Gadol is that he can’t marry a אלמנה. The מושב זקנים from the בעלי התוספות on the Pasuk כי אם בתולה מעמיו says as follows:

It seems shocking that the מושב זקנים should say such an outrageous idea. However the truth is we already find something similar in the Yerushalmi. The Mishna in the beginning of Yuma says that the כהן גדול would be separated from his family and remain in the לשכת פרהדרין (או פלהדרין) for the seven days before Yom Kippur. A backup Kohen was also set aside as a replacement for the current Kohen Gadol just in case he wasn’t able to perform the Avodah. The Yerushalmi in Yuma 5a asks if the backup Kohen would be placed in the לשכת פרהדרין with the Kohen Gadol for the seven days before to which the Yerushalmi says א"ר חגיי משם דאין מייחדין ליה עימיה דו קטל ליה אותו. They didn’t put them together because they were concerned that the Kohen Gadol might kill him, his competition, so to speak.

We see from all these examples that the greater a person, the greater a time, and the greater a place, the Yetzer Hara works extra to get him to stumble. Therefore, it’s specifically the Kohanim, and the Kohen Gadol who are so great that need the extra Mitzvos as שמירה.

In a similar vein, we see about Reb Akiva that he hated Talmidei Chachamim so much to the point where the Gemara in Pesachim 49b says Reb Akiva would say מי יתן לי ת"ח ואנשכנו כחמור that if someone would bring him a Talmid Chacham he would bit him like a donkey. However, later on, it was Reb Akiva who became the יסוד of תורה שבע"פ and he was the one to be דורש the את in the Pasuk את ה' אלקיך תירא לרבות תלתידי חכמים. Similarly, Reish Lakish was known as the ראש הליסטים (Bava Metziah 84a) and yet afterwards he became so trustworthy in money matters to the point where the Gemara in Yuma 9b says that even though a person shouldn’t lend money to someone without witnesses, but if he sees the person talking to Reish Lakish in the street, then he can lend to him without witnesses.

We see from all this that it’s specifically where there is such a potential for greatness, in that specific area, there is extreme opposition from the Yetzer Hara. A person who has a hard time learning and davening and gets distracted shouldn’t feel down about himself because it’s specifically because he is so great that the Yetzer Hara comes to mess him up. If he would have an easy time with these things, it wouldn’t indicate greatness. But where there is tremendous struggle and difficulty is the indication that there is great potential and its זה לעומת זה עשב אלקים and it’s up to a person to choose.

In this context, the Sefer HaTanya Chapter 28 says the following:

Regarding the Yerushalmi mentioned above that the Koehn Gadol might kill his replacement and the Gemara in Yuma 22b that says one Kohen stabbed another while running up the כבש of the Mizbeach, there could be another explanation as follows.

In the end of the Parsha discusses the מקלל and the Pasuk says ויצא בן אשה ישראלית. According to this second explanation, it would seem that the מקלל was very much לשם שמים standing up for the כבוד שמים and yet in the end, he was מקלל the שם.

The idea is sometimes when people are לשם שמים, there is a tremendous danger because people can do the greatest רשעות thinking its לשם שמים. Sometimes when people are לשם שמים, they have no boundaries. Therefore the Kohen who so much wants to do the Avodah in the Beis Hamikdash and might think that his doing of the Avodah is so much better than anyone else might have thoughts about killing his competition and similarly by the Kohen running up the ramp of the Mizbeach.

With Love

The רמ"ד ואלי, a Talmid of the Ramchal, says in Parshas Naso by Birkas Kohanim on the Pasuk כה תברכו את בני ישראל אמור להם, יברכך ה' that the word אמור is the source for the Kohanim to end the Brachah with באהבה. He says that אמור להם means “have love for them” because “amore” in Italian means love. The Psukim then lead in to the Birkas Kohanim and that’s how we know that the Brachah should be המברך את עמו ישראל באהבה, meaning the יברכך ה' should be done with love.

According to this, when the Pasuk says אמור אל הכהנים in the beginning of the Parshah, Hashem is telling Moshe that when he teaches the Kohanim about their additional Mitzvos, it shouldn’t be like they are being burdened rather they should see it as an expression of the special relationship that the Ribbono Shel Oilam has towards them.

This past week, יז אייר, was the Yahrzeit of the נודע ביהודה.

There is a piece in the Tzlach Yuma 65a (authored by the Nodeh B’Yehuda) that has to do with a Pasuk in the Parsha

The Gemara in Arachin 18b אמר רב אחא בר יעקב, אמר קרא: כבש בן שנתו, שנתו שלו ולא של מנין עולם that we count the years of the animal and not מנין עולם. Tosfos asks why we need a Pasuk to tell us that we go בתר שנתו ולא של מנין העולם, מסברא it must be שנתו שלו because otherwise it would be impossible to bring the Korban Tamid on Rosh Hashanah When it is born before Rosh Hashanah, the moment it becomes Rosh Hashanah the animal becomes a בן ב' שנים and if it was born on Rosh Hashanah, then it is מחוסר זמן because its only ומיום השמיני והלאה ירצה לקרבן: הק' הרב שמואל בן הרב אלחנן ל"ל קרא תיפוק ליה מסברא דאלת"ה היאך נמצא תמידין כשרין לר"ה שאם נולד קודם ר"ה מיד כשנכנס ר"ה בן ב' שנים הוא ואנו כבש בן שנה בעינן לתמידין ואם הוא נולד יום ר"ה מחוסר זמן הוא וכו' ע"ש.

The Tzlach quotes ר' מרדכי יפה זצ"ל the author of the לבוש to answer the question of Tosfos:

However, the Tzlach asks on this answer from the הלכה למשה מסיני of the חמש חטאות מתות and one of them is חטאת שעברה שנתה and if בן שנה is a minimum, then it will never happen a חטאת שעברה שנתה:

However, the Rav wanted to answer for the Baal HaLevush that what Reb Mordechai Yoffe said was not how the Tzlach quoted it, as a question of maximum or minimum. Rather just like we call a child one only between his age of one and two, meaning from after his first year of living until his second birthday, but not from the moment he is born until his first birthday, so also when the Torah says בן שנה there are two ways to read it. It could either be within the first year or it could mean within the second year, from when it becomes one until it becomes two. So a בן שנה is for sure a maximum and you can’t bring a Korban that is more than a בן שנה. But the question is if a בן שנה is already a year old and it’s the second year of living or it’s the first year of living before it has its first birthday.

So if we didn’t have a Pasuk to tell us that we go בתר שנה דידיה, it could be we go בתר שנת עולם אזלינן and it would be מוכח that בן שנה means after its first birthday between one and two and there wouldn’t be an issue of bringing a Tamid born eight days before Rosh Hashanah. Therefore the Gemara needs to bring a Pasuk to teach that we go בתר שנה דידיה because there wouldn’t be a question from Rosh Hashanah according to this understanding of בן שנה.

The question of Rashi מה ענין שבת אצל מועדות is easy to understand. However the answer is difficult to understand because how is שבת and the מועדות connected to the point where we say שכל המחלל את המועדות מעלין עליו כאלו חלל את השבתות. It would seem that Shabbos is much stricter in the sense that transgressing it warrants סקילה as opposed to the מועדות is a לאו. Furthermore, we says about Shabbos a מומר לחלל שבתות is a מומר לכל התורה כולה but we don’t say such a thing about being מחלל the מועדות. Therefore how could it be understood כל המחלל את המועדות מעלין עליו כאלו חלל את השבתות and vice versa.

על דרך דרוש, an answer could be as follows. The קדושה of שבת is constant and eternal. It comes every seven days regardless of our effort. However, the קדושה of the מועדות is dependent on Klal Yisrael who are קדשינהו לזמנים. Without קידש ב"ד-our effort, the מועד doesn’t happen. These two types of קדושה really define the קדושת ישראל. On the one hand, every Jew has that spark inside of him, what some call “the pintleh yid”, the Neshama, which is constant and can never be extinguished. On the other hand there is קדושה which is external that a person can generate through his actions only comes about through a person’s effort. The Kedusha of Shabbos is similar to that of the eternal and constant Kedusha that is within every Jew and the external Kedusha which a person can generate through his actions and effort is similar to that of the Kedusha of Yom Tov.

When it comes to Shabbos, we can’t really be מחלל or מקיים it because its קבעי וקיימי and it is there constantly regardless of if we deserve it. However, by being מקיים the מועדות which is only due to our effort, then it can show and reflect on our ability to also be מקיים את השבתות; that it’s not viewed as if we received it as a מתנה rather it’s viewed as if we reached it and deserved it because of our efforts.

In a similar vein, every person has certain natural character traits and as a result, certain mitzvos come easy to him. The natural positive character traits are similar to that of the Kedusha of Shabbos. At those moments, a person is able to reach high levels without effort, merely because of his natural personality. But he only gets credit, as if to say, for those Mitzvos and moments, when he pushes himself beyond his natural capacity to perform and it’s because of his active effort that he is able to succeed in other areas. It’s at that moment where he gets rewarded and his accomplishments, due to his natural tendencies, are recognized as if it was because of his own effort. That is the idea of כל המחלל את המועדות מעלין עליו כאלו חלל את השבתות וכל המקיים את המועדות, מעלין עליו כאלו קיים את השבתות that by being מקיים את המועדות which is only through the human effort, we are showing that we are able to be מקיים את השבתות as well even though שבת comes to us like a מתנה, without effort.
